Like Luxurious, Crossover Compacts? Tune in to Infiniti's New Premium Compact: the Q30

Infiniti recently confirmed plans to build the exciting new Q30 premium crossover—and hatchback—both petite, appealing, luxury compacts. It's based on the Infiniti Q30 concept originally introduced last year in Frankfurt.

What we believe is that Infiniti has created a new class of premium compact vehicle. As Infiniti says, the Q30 will be, "a perfect balance of coupe, hatchback and crossover designs." "The concept incorporates the superior aspects of each for a new generation of luxury consumer searching for a tailored alternative to traditional premium vehicles."

As indicated, this audacious move incorporates not only the Q30 hatchback but also a QX30 crossover, both to be built at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in Sunderland, one of Europe's largest auto assembly plants and current home to the Qashqai and Juke crossovers.

Given that Infiniti recently launched the Juke-based ESQ premium compact crossover for the Chinese market, of
course there's nothing to stop it from launching individual models for the North American and European markets as well, but we'd expect both the Q30 and QX30 to arrive in US showrooms at some point, sooner or later.

Interestingly, the Q30 will be based on a Mercedes-Benz platform, the fruitful result of Nissan and Daimler's collaboration.

The power, like the platform, will come from Mercedes-Benz. In other markets, the engine portfolio will range from a 1.6-liter gasoline unit to a 2.1-liter turbo-diesel. In the U.S., though, our sole engine most likely will be the turbo 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder shared with the CLA250. In the CLA, the engine makes 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. An IPL-badged high-performance version of the Q30 is possible down the road, but it’s unlikely to make use of AMG’s screaming 355-hp M133 turbo. It’s more plausible that Infiniti will offer its own, less radically
tuned derivative of the Benz powerplant.

But the styling itself—bold and confident—makes dynamic sense in the competitive market segment in which the QX30 versions will be slotted. Whatever forms eventually make it to America, we look forward to witnessing the launch of the groundbreaking QX30.

Stay tuned for news as actual production approaches!

Still undetermined, but now guaranteed, the Q30 offshoots may take some time to arrive at Infiniti showrooms.
