Hyundai's New 2015 Sonata Is Looking Good—and Its Price Will Be Lower

Surprise, surprise.

Usually, updates of a popular model include a price increase when the car debuts in a new year. Not so for the 2015 Hyundai Sonata which will arrive at a base price about $300 lower than last year.

True, it's only a $300 difference over last year's base model, the Sonata GLS, but we at don't think the savings will be lost on consumers. The move is part of a larger reshuffling of the Sonata line. The outgoing GLS trim has been replaced by the SE as the base car, while the 2.4-liter engine can now be ordered with the Sport trim. Meanwhile the 2.0T Sport is both the sole turbocharged offering, and tops off the Sonata pricing strategy.

The current Sonata was among the first in Hyundai's lineup skinned with the company's new design debut of striking aerodynamic curves and surface creases. The new look elevated Hyundai's profile with buyers and raised the bar for design among staid midsize sedans.

Somewhat surprisingly, the new 2015 Hyundai Sonata dials back the bold exterior design for more conservative lines that follow the larger Genesis and Equus sedans. The basic proportions and roof line carry over, but the new Sonata is slightly longer, wider and is about 2 cubic feet roomier inside. It also receives a substantial chassis overhaul that should lead to more refined handling. Four trim levels are available: SE, Sport, Limited and Sport 2.0T.

Starting price for the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder Sonata SE rolls in at $21,150. Moving up to the Sonata Sport kicks the price up to $23,175, but adds 17-inch wheels, a sportier front clip, and heated mirrors and front seats, alongside smaller visual tweaks.

The top of the 2.4-liter food chain is the Sonata Limited, which starts at $26,525. 17-inch
wheels, blind-spot monitoring (and the rest of the nanny systems), LED taillights, powered, heated, leather seats, push-button start, dual-zone climate control and a Dimension stereo are standard, among other things. A $3,500 Technology Pack includes everything found in the Sport's Tech Pack, but adds a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlamps, vented seats and it replaces the Dimension stereo with a 400-watt, 10-speaker Infinity system.

If you're a Sonata fan, you can expect the 2015s to arrive in showrooms later this summer. Those who prefer the more flamboyant style of the (very popular) previous generation may not be moved by the lower entry price. But we at have to admit—we like definitely like both versions.

Toyota's Moving U.S. Operations to Texas—to the Tune of 7.2 Billion over Ten Years

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and apparently that includes Toyota's effect on the economy. The giant Japanese automaker's new headquarters in Plano, TX, will add an estimated $7.2 billion to the state over the next 10 years, according to a new study commissioned by the city and cited by Bloomberg.

The benefits appear to be an absolute steal compared to the direct incentives that Plano and the state are giving Toyota. The report finds that by the time the automaker's campus is complete in 2018, it could have 3,650 full-time workers there at an average salary of $104,000. The city has prepared $6.75 million in grants, plus property tax discounts, according to Bloomberg. In addition to that, the state is offering the business $40 million in incentives from its Texas Enterprise Fund. This is still a fraction of what Toyota is estimated to bring in.

Toyota announced in April that it would move its US operations to Plano after being headquartered in California since 1957. The move affects thousands of employees from the sales and engineering divisions. The first workers will arrive there this fall, but Toyota will eventually have a whole campus in Plano by late 2017. The move is expected to save it huge amounts in taxation and offer employees a lower cost of living. Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz also says that the Texas location puts the headquarters closer to more of the business' factories in the south. Texas certainly appears to be showing it some southern hospitality.

Meanwhile, we at note that primary manufacturing for the world's best-selling sedan, the Toyota Camry, is based in Georgetown, Kentucky. Which, if you ask any Kentuckian, hasn't been a bad deal for the state's economy for over 25 years—since 1988, to be exact.

And early signs are prompting experts to say the new 2015 Toyota Camry will dazzle the market with a bold new design atop hood and trunk. Also, we hear the interior has received significant updates and will sport much better styling and technology than Accord.

Chrysler is having a "crazy impressive" launch for its 2015 200, claims company spokesperson Rick Deneau. Within the first two days of opening the order books, the Pentastar took over 17,000 requests for its swoopy new family sedan – 10,000 of them in the first day. The company says that's enough to keep its Sterling Heights, MI, factory running at full capacity through mid-July.
