New 2011 Mercedes R-Class Personifies the Luxury People-Mover Class

The new front-end on the R-Class makes a huge, positive impression and really complements the iconic, trendsetting roofline that swoops from rear to front. The redesigned upright grill is the centerpiece and from the A-pillar onward, the silhouette has a sharp new appeal.

From the side, the new nose does wonders for the overall profile of the vehicle. Whereas the 2010 R-Class suffered from a terminally droopy face, the vertical look lends a little bit more pride to the R twins. Instead of borrowing from the Pontiac Trans Sport playbook, the R-Class now looks like it belongs with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz clan. Never underestimate the power of a nose job. The rest of the exterior remains largely untouched by the refresh pen, though trapezoidal exhaust tips have replaced the round bits of the 2010 model.

Moving to the interior, plush leather seating invites up to six to enjoy the ride——no matter the distance. The third row is truly functional and can accommodate average height adults. Luxury touches abound, with quality materials, bright splashes of chrome and a well-designed dash.

However, R-Class powertrain options are somewhat limited in the American market, with the two choices being a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 with 272 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and a 3.0-liter diesel V6 with 211 horsepower. Both engines benefit from the smooth, seamless 7-speed automatic which delivers 15 city/19 highway on gasoline and 18 city/24 mpg highway in the diesel.

Prices for the 2011 R-Class have yet to be pinpointed, but expect about $50,000 for the gasoline version. In our view, that's a lot of people-mover for the money. :)

Mercedes GL350 Bluetec Is a Smart, Full-Size SUV

For large families interested in the long haul, the GL350 fills the bill with seating for seven and a very appealing 23 MPG on the highway. The seven-speed auto transmission is smooth as silk, propelling the 5400+-pound unibody truck to 60 mph in just over eight seconds.

The independent, air-assisted suspension (AIRMATIC) helps the SUV ride like a dream on big 20-inch alloy wheels.
As you would expect, the Benz interior is plus with firm, opulent leather seating stitched to perfection. You can opt for the Premium 2 Package ($5,950) that includes navigation, COMAND voice control, Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 audio, HD Radio, an iPod interface and keyless ignition.

Further adding to the sense of luxury are Deep glossy wood trim balanced with brushed aluminum accents on the vents, dials and various grab handles. The center console is large and there's storage galore. Fit and finish is excellent, the quality of materials is superb and cabin lighting is nearly perfect.

Distinctively European in execution, the overall aura of the cabin is classy, well-polished and appealing.
Best of all, unlike so many of its large SUV competitors, the GL350 has a third-row seat really suited to adults. Thanks to the ML's unibody platform, the German engineers were able to carve out a deep and accommodating passenger compartment in the "way back" of the GL

All of this luxury and performance brings the GL350 to a fully loaded drive-out price of around
$80,000. But believe it or not, there's a lot of value built into the price.

Insiders Say New Benz SLS AMG Started Life as a Dodge Viper

The sleek 563-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is certainly a gorgeous, exotic coupe with classic, functional gullwing doors and all-world sound, inside and out. Yet unnamed sources who say that the SLS AMG actually began life as the next-generation Dodge Viper.

The story apparently goes like this.
Dodge engineers were already hard at work on the next-gen Viper, with an aluminum chassis already completed and a new suspension on the way. Mercedes caught wind of the project and decided that the chassis would be the perfect starting point for the upcoming SLS. The two teams reportedly worked side-by-side on the project until Chrysler's cash crunch caused the Dodge team to focus its resources elsewhere. The end result was a brand-new SLS for Mercedes and a hole in Dodge's Viper lineup.

While it's hard to blame Mercedes for utilizing existing engineering work (it did, after all own Chrysler at the time) to bring the SLS to market faster and cheaper, we're thinking it would have been nice to have a new aluminum chassis Viper on the streets.

Here's hoping that the
2012 Viper
(see previous post in this blog) makes us forget about our loss.

2010 300C SRT8. Chrysler's Ultimate Hot Rod Sedan

The Chrysler 300C SRT8 has all the elements of an American muscle car wrapped in a four-door, luxury package. It's one good-looking, powerful cruiser whether you're prowling big-city boulevards are taking a trip in the country to see grandma.

The 2010 version of the 300 really stands out in a crowd, especially in SRT8 trappings with a racy, lower stance and huge wheels with bulging brake calipers peeking out. The high beltline, narrow greenhouse, minimal front overhang and pronounced wheel arches on the 300C SRT8 go a long way towards hinting at the model's performance potential. The 300's interior, on the other hand, isn't so grand—especially considering the near-$50,000 suggested price tag. But the SRT8 version makes up for it with fantastic front seats that are perfect for long hauls.

The top of the line 300 SRT8 is also very well equipped, boasting heated seats, sunroof,
dual-zone climate control and auxiliary input/iPod integration worked into Chrysler's UConnect navigation/infotainment system. Equally important, this is a pragmatic, roomy sedan with lots of room for four in total comfort.

Of course, you'll discover performance to be this car's real reason for being. All of the 300 SRT8's imperfections
are forgotten the first time you lay into the throttle and go blasting down a straightaway. The 6.1-liter Hemi roars to life and thrusts you forward with 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; the five-speed automatic holding each gear to its peak when your right foot is pressed to the floor.

The end result is 0-60 mph times in the low five-second range—and that's damn impressive for a car of this size.
At the finish line, the big red Brembo brakes bring everything back under control.

Put simply, we're just glad an American vehicle such as the 300 SRT8 exists and will continue to be glad just as long as Chrysler offers it.

Fiat-Chrysler to Speed Up New Model Launches, Including Revamp of Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring This Year

The chief of Fiat-Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne said this week that the company is far ahead of schedule in revamping models for debut this year and next. That's great news for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep fans because there are a lot of good-looking designs on the way.
In fact, Marchionne is promising 14 all-new or refreshed products the rest of this year, and says 75% of Chrysler's product line will be "touched" in 2010.

Here's the rundown:

-Dodge gets a new crossover SUV based on the Grand Cherokee and a redone Charger off the 300.

-The universally criticized (for its styling and its bargain-basement fittings) Dodge Charger and Chrysler Sebring gets an improved suspension and a fresh interior.

-Other vehicles getting makeovers include the Chrysler and Dodge minivans and three Jeeps: Wrangler, Patriot, and Compass.

-The petite Fiat 500 will be arriving on schedule at the end of the year.

-Marchionne also disclosed some details about a new Fiat-engineered compact car coming in 2011. He said the engineering work has been done and "we are 98% there on styling."

When the cute little 500 gets here, will it come with most of the options Europeans get? Let's hope so. Will Marchionne bring with the 500 an ugly, Americanized four-door version? Let's hope not.

Spy Shots of 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Test-Drive in Germany

Jeep Grand Cherokee fans have reason to cheer. Cameras caught Jeep's important new model working hard at the famous Nurburgring race track in the heart of Germany.

The question is, why would the Chrysler crew go to the trouble of lapping the popular SUV at everyone's favorite test circuit when the familiar facilities in Michigan are so close at hand? Ah, but it appears there is method to the testing madness.

It most likely centers on the Grand Cherokee's new adaptive air suspension. Called Quadra-Lift, the system will let drivers choose from a number of settings that will either raise or lower the 2011 truck's ride height according to the road conditions. While there will be two settings for
blazing your own trail, including one that raises the truck by a hefty 2.6 inches, the system also features an aero setting that lowers the vehicle by around half an inch.

That's what is undoubtedly going on in the above photo, as the Grand Cherokee is hunkered down rounding one of the Nurburgring's infamous turns.

What may be of more interest to everyday Jeep lovers is that Chrysler's legendary people-hauler will debut with a nice choice of engines for navigating the byways near your home.
When the much-anticipated 2011 Grand Cherokee finally hits the market, buyers should be able to choose from a number of engines depending on where they call home. Word is V6 and V8 options will be available here in the states, while buyers in other parts of the world will be able to opt for a clean burning diesel.

From what we see here, the stylish new SUV's looks will not let down the vehicle's locomotion.

A Great Way to Greet Spring: the All-New BMW Z4 Roadster

BMW's first roadster with a retractable hardtop is now ready for top-down driving pleasure on the backroads of Atlanta. This very elegant rag-top comes in your choice of two models: the Z4 sDrive 30i and the Z4 sDrive35i. The 30i comes with a 255 HP BMW six while the 35i boasts a gnarly 300 HP engine that will get your attention off the line. Yet the base Z4 sDrive 30i has plenty of get-up-and-go, getting you to 60 MPH in under six seconds. That, in our opinion, is a great set-up for North Atlanta byways. The 6-speed manual transmission is a delight as well. Meanwhile, the Z4 sDrive35i blasts to 60 in close to fiveseconds flat, with a top-end in excess of 130 MPH. Where in the world (in Atlanta) could you take advantage of that type of power? I-285? US400?Well, as long as you have deep pockets and plenty of points left on your license, go for it. Or just retract that sweet hardtop, turn on to a country lane flooded with sunshine and take a leisurely Sunday drive. :)

Recall mania might be an opportunity

No one can feel good when their car is recalled. Especially when it has a safety factor. Toyota dealers are doing their best to get the word out on this situation so their customers can relax a bit. It is my understanding that many models are not affected under this recall and that various models are still available for sale.

Looking on the bright side of this just may pay off for those shopping for a car now. GM & Ford have just announced “conquest” incentives up to $1000 or discount financing to anyone trading a Toyota—call or contact them for details. Certainly if you have been looking at one of their products and own a Toyota you might at least see how this helps the bottom line.

For those Toyota shoppers—as stated, several models are unaffected by the recall so this maybe a great time to make your best deal on a coveted model. One of those is the all new ‘10 4Runner —certainly one of the best frame on SUVs on the market. Bargain hunters should take a few minutes to query your local dealers—you just might benefit from all the mania.

Nash Chevy in Lawrenceville

Last Friday I was out visiting several of our dealers. In the late afternoon I stopped in to see the good folks at Nash Chevy just south of Lawrenceville, Georgia, on Scenic Highway. It's a very large dealership with well over three paved acres and a variety of buildings including a large showroom, service department and body shop, it also boasts one of the largest GM parts warehouses in Georgia. Nash is an institution, having opened in 1955 —that's 54+ years of selling a classic American brand.

I grew up in a Chevy household too, my father worked for my mother's uncle at Ed Stinn Chevrolet in Cleveland Ohio in the 60's and he owned his own Chevy store in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. As a boy I dreamed of big block Corvettes and SS Camaros. It was a pleasure to see that although everything has changed—the tradition of performance and clean design remains.

The all new Camaro is a wonderful looking car with hints of the original upright muscular pony car plus a good portion of modern technology. Nash had three brand new models parked under their overhang next to the showroom. Another new model that caught my eye was the 2010 Equinox crossover. Again, this is a typical clean, direct looking Chevy design with just the right amount of chrome and style. Nash was delivering one to a young women who was obviously delighted as they took her picture next to its slippery shape. It gets up to an amazing 32MPG on the highway and looks like it has plenty of space inside.

I'm a sucker for trucks and after visiting with manager Mike Sadlock, I walked out past an entire collection of commercial trucks they have on the lot—big dumps, utility bodies, and several lines of thee quarter ton and larger Silverados all sparkling in the afternoon sun. I just had to take some shots. What can I say...cut me and I bleed bow ties.

Atlanta Auto Dealer Ads a useful tool.

If you are reading this blog you have stumbled on a new idea in automotive marketing. Atlanta Auto Dealers Ads is designed with car shoppers in mind. Avoid the hassle of trying to search for individual dealer sites so you can compare a price or look for information. This site does it all for you.

Every Atlanta area dealer is listed with links to their individual sites. Once you are there you can flip back and forth to compare prices and services. Think of it as a virtual auto mall online...from new Acuras to new Volvos and everything in between. You’ll find multiple listings for Atlanta Toyota dealers, and Atlanta Honda dealers. Plus every Atlanta Chevrolet dealer and Atlanta Ford Dealer.

Another great benefit is being able to cross-shop—for example look at a new Audi A4 model and quickly check out a new BMW 325 sedan—no more typing in searches and checking through pages of listings.
Many of the dealers listed also have special Mini-Sites that are tailored to this format and offer deals you can’t find else ware.

Take a look at Roswell Infiniti—each new Infiniti has its own page with a description, price and a payment. It’s like a newspaper ad with interactive features. At t
he bottom of each page is a direct e-mail link to the dealer. Use it to ask for more information or if you’ve decided to buy—just tell them to get your new FX cleaned and ready to pick up! Shopping for a new Mercedes-Benz? Atlanta Classic Cars does a great job updating their site and has a Flash page directly linked here.

If you’re looking for a new Toyota, try Sandy Springs Toyota... they also have a Mini-Site with every model. The nice thing is that there is no one rushing you, no pressure—take your time and make the best decision.
Atlanta Auto Dealer Ads is convenient, easy and best of all, free. Even if you don’t need a new or used car now it can give you vital information and help finding a dealer in your area for service, parts, or even a body shop. Bookmark it and pass it on to your family and friends!

Detriot Auto Show this Week

The North American Auto Show started Monday in Detroit. This year’s show appears to be a bit better as the economy recovers from its downturn in ‘09. Although the domestic manufacturers have been hit hard it looks like they still have some interesting if not particularly innovative designs in the pipeline.

The new large Cadillac concept—dubbed the XTS Platinum is a good example. It appears to be a stunning design meant to compete with rear-wheel drive S-Class Mercedes’ and 7 Series BMWs The most recent Caddys are once again evoking some passion in consumers—it is a shame that it took GM decades to realize that copying ideas in a unique way can be a good thing. That said, the car is still years off and the market swings so quickly that everything just might change again.

Certainly fossil fuel cost has a lot to do with the way designers are designing—not just cars either. Houses, boats, and even clothes have all been affected by the trend. Small cars are very evident in the show this year with new GM designs and Fiat/Chrysler 500’s certain to be hitting American roads soon.

The problem is that when gas prices went back down most people predictably forgot the panic of close to $5 a gallon. Small cars are not selling all that well, and now as most of manufactures have new designs just about to be released there appears to be little interest. One big factor may be the newly
passed higher MPG requirements that will force makers to produce and sell large amounts of compacts to keep their corporate fuel averages as high as possible.

This small car glut will cause them to sell at little profit and likely with the help of large customer incentives as well. It's ironic that they may have to depend on Mid-East Sheiks to help them out by cutting oil production once again.

Thanks to netcarshow.com for the manufacturers photos.

Atlanta Auto Dealer Ads on ACarDealer.com was the best...it allowed me to visit several dealers off one site...no more searching for hours just to find dealer ads or web sites!
